Tax Trainee |
School/College Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

I work in the tax department at Schroders which I have found to be a really interesting experience. Of course there is a steep learning curve from school to the work place, but I settled down quickly and have learnt an enormous amount about the investment management industry since the programme started. Tax is relevant in almost every decision a fund house can make and that means that I’ve had exposure to many different areas of the business, from marketing to wealth management. I would certainly say that interacting with some high profile figures both internally and externally has helped me to develop greater inter-personal skills and my natural inclination towards analysis and numbers made me suitable for tax.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Tax is complicated. The people in my department are very intelligent and often have many years of experience. The most challenging thing is going to meetings and trying to understand in order to contribute. You pick up the technical jargon over time, but it takes a while, and I’m lucky that my team is always willing to answer my questions if I don’t understand something.

How did you get into your job?

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go straight to university or work for a year. My careers office at school told me about the Investment20/20 programme and from there I applied to Schroders. Investment20/20 has definitely opened doors for me. I now have actual work experience which counts for so much when employers are looking to hire and hopefully it should be easier for me now to get a role in the investment management industry after university. Aside from what I can put on a CV, Investment20/20 has meant that I have matured a lot and become more confident as an individual.

What are your future aspirations?

I’m going to university and then plan to come back to work in investment management.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

Necessary. The skills I have learnt and the growing up I have done are enormous. I highly recommend the programme to others.
