Why do you enjoy your job?

At Invesco in the finance team I have been responsible for delivering financial analysis to management, identifying trends and providing insight into business performance. I have also worked within the accounting team and participated on a number of ad-hoc projects. I really enjoyed the varied nature of my role, have worked directly with members of the finance senior leadership team and have had the opportunity to travel. My role has allowed me to develop an understanding of an investment management business from an operational and financial perspective and has furthered technical skills that I’m sure will be essential in my future career.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

One challenge has been prioritising the needs of my various stakeholders and balancing my work with studying for professional qualifications. That said, the friendly and open nature of the individuals within the finance team allows for effective discussion and guidance on prioritising workload and balancing work and study.

How did you get into your job?

I joined Invesco as a trainee financial analyst after graduating from the University of Bath. Investment20/20 has allowed me to effectively transition into the investment management industry despite my slightly unconventional degree in Sport and Exercise Science. Prior to this scheme, I had worked in technology on my placement year but had no relevant experience within financial services and a limited network of contacts within the industry. This scheme has allowed me to develop my network and instilled skills essential for my future career.

What are your future aspirations?

This scheme has furthered my passion for the financial markets which I previously developed from reading, research and networking at university. Investment20/20 has been an essential stepping stone on my journey in helping me secure a summer internship in one of the investment teams within a large US investment bank. I hope to convert this into a full time role and become an established investor. In parallel to this, I would like to become a CFA Charterholder and aspire to help solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

Investment20/20 has been essential in helping me break into the investment management industry. It has allowed me to develop a network of contacts, meet influential individuals and build upon my technical skills. I would recommend it without hesitation to curious individuals interested in the world of investment management.
