Why do you enjoy your job?
I work in the Investment Risk team at . We work closely with the fund managers in the front office, to help manage risk in their equity portfolios. It is a highly analytical role where I get to apply my strengths in problem solving and programming. I enjoy the challenge of providing insights directly to the investment teams from which real investment decisions are made.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
The biggest challenge for someone junior like me is to learn as much as I can as quickly as possible. I have learnt that people are willing to invest the time to help if you are committed and focused. I am currently building up my knowledge base in risk models, programming (R, Shiny and VBA) and statistics so that when a key question is asked by a stakeholder, I have the right tools to answer it in a timely manner.
How did you get into your job?
I graduated in engineering and spent a year in industry working for a renewable energy company. After discovering Ben Graham and value investing, I decided to pursue a career in investment management. Making the transition was difficult without an economics background but Investment20/20 came up on Google as a saviour. I secured a trainee role at Janus Henderson in Investment Analytics and almost a year later, I joined the Investment Risk team.
What are your future aspirations?
In the era of artificial intelligence and big data, my aspiration is to become technically competent and build up domain knowledge in quantitative investing and risk management. My one piece of advice for young people would be to utilise LinkedIn for their job search – connect with people in the industry and learn about areas where they can add value.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
Investment20/20 opened up a whole new world for me.
