My job is about asking questions and taking time to try and understand different bits of information and piece them together. Willingness to ask questions is one of the most important traits to have. Then from that you have to form an opinion and ultimately make a decision and be held accountable. It’s a challenge to try and make the right decisions. You need to understand the companies and sectors you look at and so you’ve got to be a personality that doesn’t mind spending time looking at small details. You’ve also got to be willing to make a decision and put your name on it and deal with the consequences. You’re going to get things wrong so you need to be resilient and learn from the mistakes. I’m also pretty competitive and obviously want to try and get things right when others don’t.
There’s always something new to learn or understand. It isn’t a job where you are given a set task to do and then you finish it and you’re done. Companies and markets are always changing and evolving so you have to keep up with that.
I finished university and then was still figuring out exactly what I wanted to do and was trying to find jobs that I thought would be interesting. I spent a year doing a bit of teaching and working in a political think-tank and then applied for the job at Jupiter when I saw Investment20/20 on the internet. I started in the UK sales team and worked in that team for just over 18 months. It was really useful to better understand the company and the industry. Then an opportunity came up in the Fixed Income team and fortunately I managed to make the move. Investment20/20 gave me the chance to get into the industry that otherwise I probably wouldn’t have had. Asset Management isn’t the easiest industry to get involved with and so Investment20/20 was really important for me to get a foot in the door and start understanding the industry more broadly.
Slightly predictable but I’d like to make the move to being a fund manager at some point. That’s the ultimate aim further down the line.
