Why do you enjoy your job?
I work in the Global Technology department at Schroders on the production release side. My team bridges the gap between the software developers and the company users which is insightful, as I get exposure to the different teams within Technology. No two days are ever the same in Tech as there are constantly new projects being developed in order to make our trading, transaction and financial analysis processes more efficient. For days that I have a lighter workload, my team have enrolled me in courses for coding, VBAs and database management. This means that should I decide to work in a different area in the future, I can transfer these skills to my new role.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
In the first few weeks, the most challenging thing about my job was adjusting to all of the new systems of a computer. Although I was proficient in Excel before I started, I had no real clue about any of the software, databases or systems that my department used.
How did you get into your job?
I studied Latin, Maths and Chemistry for A-level and intended to study Natural Sciences at university. However, during year 13, I decided that as I wasn’t fully committed to the subject I ought to take a gap year to explore my other options. My school didn’t inform us of the alternative options, so I had no idea that a scheme such as Investment20/20 even existed and could give me the hands on work experience that I wanted. I applied, thinking that I was unlikely to get a job in finance as I hadn’t studied economics at school – but luckily I was offered a job at Schroders! Investment20/20 has made me aware that it is possible to have a successful career in finance without a degree.
What are your future aspirations?
When my contract ends, I will be going to university to study French and Classics, with the hope of returning to finance in the future. I aspire to eventually work either as an investment banker or a fund manager.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
Being part of Investment20/20 has been one of the best experiences of my life! I have had the opportunity to learn more about the industry and network with other professionals through the training and insight days that they run. I feared that I would miss out on the social aspect of university, but I have made some great friends among the other trainees since meeting them at the social events run across the different firms. Although I have decided to go to university, I have no doubt that Investment20/20 has given me a foot in the door of this competitive sector and will still help to shape my future in the industry once I graduate.
