As an apprentice at Aberdeen Standard Investments (ASI), the thing I enjoy most is that I change departments every four months for the 2 year apprenticeship. This has allowed me to gain further insight to the business as a whole as well as learn how to adapt to change and expand my knowledge within the investment management industry.
So far, I have completed a rotation in the digital marketing department and I am currently half way through my rotation in the business risk department. I am constantly meeting and working with new people within different areas of the business as well as continually learning new skills that will allow me to progress within my career. The apprenticeship programme provides on the job training as well as putting us through a diploma in Digital Application Support (SCQF L6).
For me, the most challenging thing about my job is changing departments every four months – just as you feel comfortable within your role and team, it is back to the start again. However, everyone within ASI is very welcoming and supportive towards apprentices and it is exciting meeting new people and learning new skills.
In my final year at school, I applied to study business management at university and had not considered any other options. However, while studying for my exams, I realised that another 4 years in education was not for me and instead an apprenticeship seemed like the right choice. I applied for the ASI apprenticeship role online and attended a selection morning followed by a short interview. I was then asked back for 2 weeks’ work experience within the Product Development department which ended with a final interview. I joined the business the following September.
Since it is so early in my career, I am unsure where exactly I see myself in the future. However, I know that at the end of my apprenticeship I will be able to secure a full time position in a role that best suits me.
This opportunity has opened doors and given me experiences in the financial industry that I had no idea about, and would not have had through any other programme. I am excited to see what happens next.
