Why do you enjoy your job?
I am currently an apprentice at the newly merged Aberdeen Standard investments. During my 2 year apprenticeship I will rotate round a variety of teams within the operations division. For example the teams might include risk, investment operations, IT, business systems, internal audit, investor services, and compliance. These rotations allow me to drive my own career path and see where I have the strongest skill set and interests. I get great enjoyment out of meeting new people and learning about different departments across the business. The programme also gives great flexibility to move, as rotations only last for four months. It is a brilliant way to gain experience and knowledge in parts of the business that I would never have considered a career in before. Also while gaining valuable on the job training, throughout my first year of the apprenticeship I have been completing a Digital Applications SVQ Diploma, which is also another great part of the apprenticeship programme.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
The most challenging part of my job is the start of a new rotation. By the end of a rotation I feel like I have a clear understanding of the job role and can work efficiently without needing extra assistance. When starting a new rotation all of a sudden I’m back to square one in a new position and a new team. But each team offers great support and it allows you to find your feet in no time.
How did you get into your job?
I applied to university and college to study business management but I was apprehensive about the thought of higher education as I felt learning and earning would suit me best. I then found out about my apprenticeship programme online, swiftly prepped my application form and applied. I was invited to a morning which consisted of a few ice-breaker and problem solving challenges and a short interview. After that I was lucky enough to be asked back for 2 weeks work experience in the summer to see how I fitted in. I knew then that I wanted to work here. After a final interview I thankfully got the job.
What are your future aspirations?
I am very open minded and keen to try out as many departments as possible to help me create a successful future. I feel that the environment within this ever-growing company will help me to achieve my full potential.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
This programme has given me the opportunity to gain a vast knowledge about the financial industry that may not have been possible elsewhere.
