Why do you enjoy your job?
Since starting my apprenticeship in September 2016 I have enjoyed rotating around different departments every four months. It lets me meet new people and learn about different parts of the business such as business systems, finance, risk, compliance, digital marketing and human resources and how they all tie in together. I gain exposure to different areas of the business that I would never have considered a career in before.
Before I started at Aberdeen Asset Management* my confidence was not where I wanted it to be but now it has grown a lot more by meeting new people, being given new responsibilities and going to training. From doing volunteering and charity work at school I was used to working with different people but I have seen myself become a better team player from being given tasks to do which may mean working on my own or working with others. I have to work hard and to the best standards otherwise I would not only be letting myself down but also my team.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
What I find most challenging about my job is going into a new team having to start from scratch again trying to settle into my new team. However I like getting to know new people and it is helping build my confidence by getting myself out there and being part of the team.
How did you get into your job?
After completing my six years at school, I had originally applied to study at university and had not considered anything else. However in my fifth year at school I took part in the Career Ready programme which offered me the chance to have a five week internship at a business which happened to be Aberdeen Asset Management. I enjoyed it that much I wanted to apply for the apprenticeship as well as university because I was still not sure what would be the best option for me. I attended an information evening then submitted my application and completed an interview. After completing the two week work experience with the compliance team, I was sure that I no longer wanted to go to university and wished to start working as an apprentice. After my final interview I was very excited to be offered the role as an apprentice. I then declined all of my university offers and joined the company in September.
What are your future aspirations?
Since joining my apprenticeship my aspirations have changed because I was certain where I wanted to work but since having exposure to other teams I am not sure where I want to go. I feel the more teams I rotate the better idea I will have. All I know is I want to be in a job where I get to help people and show my full potential.
