Why do you enjoy your job?

Choosing this career path at a young age has been extremely beneficial in a number of ways. My confidence has dramatically improved through arranging meetings, sharing my ideas and asking a lot of questions. Forming networks and creating connections throughout the organisation has helped by not only opening up new opportunities but also making me feel more settled at work and confident as a person.

Alongside this, I became more independent through basic activities connected to having a full time job. Managing how I would spend and save my monthly pay became a huge aspect and helped me think in advance. Even the simple task of getting to and from the office was something I had to get used to, but added to the overall experience of working life. All these aspects have prepared me further for the future and have provided me with a great experience at a young age.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

My exposure to the financial sector before this point was small after coming into the role straight from school. Workshops quickly helped to aid my understanding of the company as a whole, along with my day to day tasks. Having this foundation knowledge played a key part in improving my overall job performance.

How did you get into your job?

In early 2019, I heard about Standard Life Aberdeen’s school leavers programme. I was still unsure of what I wanted my future to look like and this felt like a great opportunity to experience the world of work. I soon signed up and entered the recruitment process. I never imagined that several months later I would be starting a full time job.

What are your future aspirations?

I have recently received an unconditional offer to study law at the University of Edinburgh at the end of the year. The Investment20/20 Programme has provided me with core skills such as communication, leadership, initiative and knowledge which I can carry forward with me and apply to my studies. Each day I continue to learn, and I am excited to see what the next few months hold. I plan to maintain the connections and relationships I’ve established here and I will hopefully return to work with the business at a later date.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

The programme continues to challenge my knowledge as well as time management skills as I must ensure extra tasks are completed efficiently. The Investment20/20 programme offers the perfect combination to gain various skills while on the job and apply them in future situations. I would encourage others to apply.
