Why do you enjoy your job?

I work in the CASS controls team within Core Operations. I am responsible for completing the majority of the team’s daily processes, as well as improving and creating new processes. I enjoy being challenged on a daily basis to use my critical thinking and analytical skills in order to complete the tasks assigned to me. I have been given a great amount of responsibility within my team, much more than I have ever been given in previous jobs. It gives me a great amount of satisfaction knowing that the work I am doing matters.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

The most challenging thing about my job is the technical knowledge required in order to become an effective member of the team. It is a very steep learning curve coming into the financial industry straight from school, especially when you are placed in such a niche team.

How did you get into your job?

I applied for the Investment20/20 scheme while I was in my 6th year of high school. I had received an unconditional offer from the University of Edinburgh, however I decided to defer my entry in order to gain a year’s experience within the financial sector. The experience I have gained throughout this year is invaluable to me, and will hopefully set me up well for future employment within the financial sector.

What are your future aspirations?

After completing my year at Standard Life Investments* (SLI), I will be attending the University of Edinburgh to study Economics with Finance. Currently, I have been sponsored by SLI to study for my IOC, and have completed the first part of this already. I plan on completing the certificate before heading off to university in September. I cannot say what my exact plans will be after completing my degree; however I will most likely be looking to enrol in one of the graduate programs at a large financial firm.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

It has been a great way to kick-start my career, and has given me experience that not many graduates will have when looking for employment after university.
