The Role
As an Operational Risk Apprentice, you will join our Operational Risk team, supporting the private markets business, including areas such as private equity, private credit, real assets and infrastructure. This is a great opportunity to build a strong foundation in risk management while learning how risks are understood and managed across different stages of the investment process.
Working alongside experienced colleagues, you will gain hands‑on exposure to how operational risks are identified, assessed, monitored and managed. You will collaborate with teams across the business, including front office, operations, compliance, legal and technology, helping you build a rounded understanding of how we work together to deliver a quality service. As you grow in confidence, you’ll be encouraged to take initiative, follow established processes, and make suggestions for improving the way we work, all while developing practical skills that support your future career.
What will you be doing?
As an Operational Risk Apprentice you will:
• Assist with the identification and assessment of operational risks across private markets strategies
• Support risk and control self-assessments (RCSAs) and maintaining risk registers
• Help monitor key risk indicators (KRIs) and escalating emerging issues where appropriate
• Support incident management processes, including logging, analysis, and reporting of operational events
• Support the collection, review, and presentation of management information (MI) for risk reporting and governance forums
• Assist in maintaining key risk-related registers (e.g., risk, incident, action, and control registers) and following up on associated actions to ensure timely closure
• Assist with operational risk input into new product launches, fund setups, and business change initiatives
• Support regulatory and client-driven risk reporting requests
• Help maintain policies, procedures, and governance documentation
• Prepare materials for risk committees and internal governance forums
• Conduct research on industry best practices and emerging risks in private markets
What will I need to be successful in this role?
• A genuine interest in financial markets, private markets, and risk management
• Confident communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders with ease
• Ability to manage processes and coordinate with different people
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Efficient, proactive, structured approach to work and very well organized
• High level of accuracy and good attention to detail
• Can effectively manage day to day work, alongside apprenticeship qualification
• Moderate understanding of the MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• A proactive team player who is confident about working with others but also independently and can promptly escalate any issue and work remotely where required
• Logical and analytical approach coupled with intelligence, passion, and a drive to learn
Minimum Requirements
• Available to start the apprenticeship programme in September 2026
• You must not be enrolled into another further education programme at the beginning of the programme
• Be a UK citizen or have proof of your right to work in the UK
• Living in England
• Minimum of Grade 4 in GCSE English and Mathematics
• Minimum of Grade C in Three A-Levels or equivalent such as BTEC Nationals
Training Provided
As an Operational Risk Apprentice with M&G, you will undertake the Compliance and Risk Level 3 Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship will be delivered through a blend of live online learning, pre-recorded lectures, and face to face inductions and masterclasses
Future Prospects
This is a fixed term contract for 18 – 23 months upon which the business may decide to retain, subject to the Apprentice performance, headcount, and available funding. If recruited into a permanent role, the individual will follow the career progression applicable to the specific role/department.
Salary
£26,900 per annum plus benefits
