SIMON MORTON-GRANT
Columbia Threadneedle Investments
Client Portfolio Analyst
Postgraduate
Why do you enjoy your job?
I am
currently working in Investments as a Client Portfolio Analyst on the Asian and
Emerging Market Equities desk. I work alongside the client portfolio manager, who
provides a crucial link between the fund managers and the clients who invest
with us. Tasks include reporting on recent performance, conducting competitor
analysis to understand our positioning in the market, and interaction with
potential new clients to encourage investment into our funds. Furthermore, I
regularly participate in meetings surrounding portfolio composition and stock
selection. The role itself requires constant interaction with different areas
and people around the business, suiting my interpersonal skills. I am also
extremely keen to learn as much as possible about the business, with the
educational aspect of the role proving invaluable.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
I find
it challenging knowing that it is not possible to understand
everything straight away. It can be daunting for someone who has just started out in their
career to be surrounded by investment professionals with extensive knowledge.
However through
very helpful colleagues and having the ambition to broaden my own knowledge, I
have been able to tackle such challenges.
How did you get into your job?
During my degree course in chemical engineering I became interested in
the fluctuating price of commodities. This led me to do further research into
the investment field and complete a summer internship at an investment bank
between my university years. I therefore applied to the scheme already with a
passion for the industry, given my analytical nature and interest in financial
markets,
and joined Columbia Threadneedle Investments only months after completing my
degree.
What are your future aspirations?
My experiences over the past few months have been extremely positive,
solidifying my desire to remain in the industry and more importantly at
Columbia Threadneedle Investments. I have always had my sights on attaining the
most successful position possible, climbing the so called “corporate ladder”
and seizing any attractive opportunities.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
The Investment20/20 scheme has expanded my horizons, giving me an insight into the different areas of asset management whilst exposing me to a vast network of high calibre professionals. I have learnt invaluable skills and gained a wealth of knowledge, expanded my professional network and had the opportunity to put forward my own thoughts and ideas into the company’s processes. I believe these skills will equip me to tackle challenges later on in my career.
