Why do you enjoy your job?
I enjoy my job because it varies daily. I am always doing something different which means I’m never bored and always have things to do. I work in client services which means communication and maintaining strong relationships with clients is vital. I enjoy this part the most because it means I communicate with internal and external contacts, enhancing my knowledge and understanding of the industry, as well as building my network.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
The most challenging thing about my job would be answering the phone. The reason being is because you are under pressure to answer questions without preparation. This can be quite overwhelming when you don’t know what they are going to say, and slightly difficult if you don’t understand the query being asked. I am fortunate enough to be in a team who are supportive and understanding, so they will always help when I get stuck. With this said, overtime I have learnt that doing it more really does pay off and makes you more confident.
How did you get into your job?
I always knew that university wasn’t for me. The main reason being that I didn’t know what I wanted to study and another being that I didn’t want to get into thousands of pounds worth of debt for a degree that wasn’t beneficial for my future. The last year of 6th form was stressful and huge amounts of pressure due to the fact that my school pushed university so significantly. When I came across Investment20/20, I was overwhelmed with the opportunities available where I can learn on the job, earn money while doing so and kick-start my career at 18 in the Asset Management Industry. I applied to a few roles that I thought suited me best and was fortunate enough to hear back from Schroders who offered me a position in Client Services as a trainee in Distribution.
What are your future aspirations?
At the moment I am really enjoying where I am in my career and I am eager to progress further in the company in Client Services. However, through this scheme and Schroder’s flexibility, trainees and apprentices are able to move teams in the company if a position arises that better suits the individual and if circumstances are right. For now, I am keen to learn more about the industry itself, continue to broaden my knowledge in Client Services and take my exams in May which will hopefully put me in a good position for my future.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
Investment20/20 has been a great experience all round. I have met people that I never thought I would meet and made connections that I will stay in contact with for a long-time. Being given the opportunity to start my career in a company as reputational as Schroder’s is an amazing experience and I urge all school leavers to consider a traineeship in the Asset Management industry.
